Partly since I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975) I have been a student of the liberal arts education first hand (Brown University) and believe that teaching should be a fusion of studies in art along with other disciplines. This is not a surprise since an ethnomusicologist holding a PhD and an MA from UCLA is interested in the arts. My ethnomusicology program, which I began from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within an music department within the College of Letters and Science. It's a pleasure to be able to combine multiple areas of interest. Also, I like looking at the larger view. It's an absolute pleasure to be able to impart knowledge and expertise to graduate and undergraduate students. I'm a published with three of my books published: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing Music and Expressing Culture. In between, I'll alternate between academic tasks and periods of administrative tasks (I am Chair of Department of Music from 1983 until 1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998 and the Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans from 1994 to 1998; Chair of the Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and I am now the Chair of Department of Music).
